We have been asked (indirectly) by Handa Bray, the owner of Shere Manor estate (which includes Holmbury Hill, Pitch Hill and part of Winterfold), to relay the following message. Please take regard of this, as Handa is a great supporter of access for all, including mountain bikers:
A request to cycling groups who make Shere their starting point for day outings.
Please arrange to meet, and park, in the Shere Recreation Ground (opposite the end of the shopping street) - or the weekend car park at Shere Surgery in Gomshall Lane (signposted with a P at weekends), but not the Square, the shopping street or by the river.
Groups are now coming as often as once or twice a week (they must come from a very wide area), and the problem is they leave their cars for anything up to 8 hours at a time, leaving almost no short-term parking space for customers of the shops or the White Horse pub. The group last Saturday (who were very nice and friendly, but refused to budge) parked at least 6 cars in the Square before 10 am, and Collins Greengrocers lost considerable business on what should have been a busy day.
The cyclists are welcome, but their cars are not-at least in The Street and the Square. It would be a great help if they would park elsewhere. Both of the alternatives noted are very close to the village centre.
Many thanks.
Handa Bray
