Summer Lightning Repaired

Written by Ben, 29th March 2006
One of the two sections of Summer Lightning closed off by the harvesting is open again now.

Sunday, 12 March saw us working to clear the penultimate section of the trail, which was covered in brash, mulch and sawdust. The Forestry Commission's contractors clear cut quite a bit of woodland in the area, and Summer Lightning's last two sections were in the way.

Thanks to Tim Dicker, harvesting forester for the Commission, who took time out to walk the trail with us last year so we knew which bits were going to be cleared. the contractors did a great job of leaving the trail intact. We got a major boost in the morning from the Nirvana Cycles Sunday ride, Simon and tons of riders descended on the trail and shifted tons of brash in about ten minutes flat - something that would have taken us hours to do on our own.

At present, the cleared section is bedding in very slowly - there's been zero rain, a lot of cold, dry wind blowing over the area, and no trees to capture moisture, so at present it's neither smooth nor fast. This will change over time, and hopefully with a bit of rain, a little maintenance and a lot of riding it'll be back on form come the summer.

The next trail day is on Sunday, 9th April over at Holmbury Hill - we'll be looking at BKB again. More information to follow.
